Broken Ecology

How do we stay in relation when relation itself becomes difficult? What happens when the relations between entities and their surroundings begin to shift, break down, or become impossible to sustain? How do we remain connected to others when proximity turns into a disturbance, when separation is necessary? Broken Ecology asks what it means to maintain, withdraw from, or distance ourselves from the relations that surround us?
The evening will feature two sets each approaching these questions from a different perspective, brought together in a single radio show.

Davide Tidoni's set reflects on how sound shapes social relations between neighbours. Through a series of edited interviews with individuals who complain about their neighbours, or who have caused disturbance to their neighbours, sound will be presented as a vehicle for both connection and disruption within social relations.

Ernst Maréchal will present excerpts from his Social Recordings sound archive, focusing on the relation between the recordist and those recorded. The recordings emerge through a dialogue between the two, with those recorded being the first to listen to their documented selves. But what happens to their relation when the recordings are musically transformed at a distance?

Davide Tidoni is an interdisciplinary artist working from the boundaries of spatial, material, and relational dimensions of sound. His work addresses questions regarding interactions with acoustic space, impermanence, and interdependence. His practice also includes interests in protest songs, social contexts of struggle, and the use of sound in football supporters culture.

Ernst Maréchal is an audiovisual artist, performer, and singer-songwriter. With his work, he seeks to address, understand, and (re)imagine issues of (in)equality, diversity, and commonality. He is interested in the ethics of engaging with the voices he meets: how direction and meaning can be given and positions taken – together – around shared interests that he alone cannot embody. As an artistic (PhD) researcher at the RITCS School of Arts/VUB, he develops Social Recordings, a process-based practice that gathers (in musical assemblies) field recordings, sonic encounters, and improvisations created in diverse social, pedagogical, and artistic contexts, in collaboration with artists and non-artists of all ages.
