Naanu Collective: Transmissions w/ Jon Sensmeier + docu by Farah Kassem

Naanu is een collectief van onafhankelijke filmmakers en kunstenaars dat zich richt op creatieve samenwerking over landsgrenzen heen. Het project werd opgestart door alumni van de DocNomads Master, een rondreizende opleiding in drie Europese steden (Lissabon, Boedapest, Brussel) gewijd aan het regisseren van documentairefilms. Dit om de diepgaande interculturele dialoog die tijdens de opleiding tot stand kwam, voort te zetten.
Hoewel cinema de kern vormt van Naanu, zijn onze interesses en projecten net zo divers als de leden van ons collectief. Momenteel organiseren we artist-in-residence-programma's en workshops, creatieve retraites, filmvertoningen en leeskringen. www.naanu.world

Met “Transmissions”, de avonden die het Naanu-collectief organiseert in De Bosbar en op WAV-radio, willen we enkele van onze samenwerkingspraktijken delen en tegelijkertijd een ruimte creëren waar een speelse uitwisseling van ideeën over collectieve praktijken kan plaatsvinden.

JON SENSMEIER

De Duitse saxofonist en componist Jon Sensmeier ontrafelt het geluid van zijn instrument elektronisch, waarbij hij harmonieuze lagen van weeft en deze doordrenkt met urgente melodieën die weerklinken doorheen pulserende texturen. De jazztaal verwordt tot ambient en groeit uit tot post metal.
Als filmcomponist verzorgde Jon de soundtrack voor de eerste speelfilm van Naanu Collective-lid Farah Kassem, “We Are Inside” (2024).
Vandaag presenteert Jon zijn gloednieuwe album "Tell me where you start and I end", dat hij in februari 2026 uitbracht bij het Kopenhaagse label CRRNT Records.
Hij wordt vergezeld door de Canadese muzikant Paul Jacob Fossum op synthesizers.

FARAH KASSEM

Farah Kassem, geboren in Tripoli, Libanon, behaalde een bachelordiploma in audiovisuele studies aan de ALBA-universiteit en scoorde een master in documentairefilm bij DocNomads.
Farah is zowel regisseur als monteur en promoveert momenteel met onderzoek in de kunsten aan de KU Leuven en LUCA in België. Daarnaast geeft ze filmworkshops. Ze heeft verschillende bekroonde korte documentaires geregisseerd die op diverse internationale filmfestivals zijn vertoond, waaronder Visions du Réel, het Dubai International Film Festival en vele andere.

In 2024 bracht ze “We Are Inside” uit, haar eerste speelfilm, die door critici zeer lovend werd ontvangen.
Vanavond presenteert ze haar korte documentaire “Cleaning Schaerbeek”.
Een inwoonster van Schaarbeek, die tijdens een hoog terreuralarm in Brussel woont en te bang is om haar huis te verlaten, merkt iets ongewoons op voor haar raam. Ze besluit de autoriteiten te waarschuwen. De film speelt zich volledig af in het appartement in een wijk in Brussel die bekend staat om zijn mix van Noord-Afrikaanse, Turkse, Marokkaanse en andere immigrantengemeenschappen.
Kassem behandelt het thema paranoia in de nasleep van de terroristische aanslagenin Parijs, die terug te voeren waren naar deze wijk.

NAANU TRANSNATIONAL SOUNDSYSTEM

We vroegen alle Naanu-leden, verspreid over de hele wereld, om ons nummers door te sturen die een gevoel van verzet oproepen, of dat nu universeel en/of persoonlijk is. De aanwezige Naanu-radiopresentatoren in De Bosbar zullen deze nummers via de (grensloze) radiogolven naar hen terugsturen.

Naanu is a collective of independent filmmakers and artists focused on transnational creative collaboration. The project was initiated by alumni of the DocNomads Masters, an itinerant program (Lisbon, Budapest, Brussels) dedicated to documentary film directing. We come from all corners of the world, and our wish is to carry forward the deep intercultural dialogue fostered during the program.
Whilst cinema is at the heart of Naanu, our interests and projects are as diverse as the members of our collective. We currently organise artist residencies and workshops, creative retreats, film screenings and reading circles.

JON SENSMEIER

German saxophonist and composer Jon Sensmeier electronically unfolds the sound of his instrument, weaving layers of harmony and infusing them with urgent melodiesthat echo through pulsating textures. Jazz language enters an ambient flow and amplifies it to the size of post-metal in this solo project that started more than 7 years ago. As a film composer, Jon provided the original score for Naanu Collective member Farah Kassem's first feature "We Are Inside" (2024).
For this event, Jon will present his brand-new album "Tell me where you start and Iend", which he released in February 2026 on the Copenhagen label CRRNT Records.
He will be joined by Canadian musician Paul Jacob Fossum on synthesizers.

FARAH KASSEM

Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, Farah Kassem graduated from ALBA University with a bachelor’s degree in Audio Visual Studies. She completed a Master in documentary film-making at DocNomads. Farah is both a director and an editor and is currently doing doctoral research in the Arts at KU Leuven and LUCA in Belgium. She is also a film workshop trainer.
She has directed several award-winning short documentary films screened at various international film festivals, including Visions du Réel, Dubai International Film Festival, and many others.

Tonight, she will present her short documentary "Cleaning Schaerbeek".
Living in Brussels during high terror alerts, a resident from Schaerbeek, too afraid to leave her house, notices an unusual happening in front of her window. She decides to alert the authorities. Set entirely inside the apartment in a neighbourhood in Brussels known for its mix of North African, Turkish, Moroccan, and other immigrant communities, Kassem approaches the topic of paranoia in the wake of terrorist attacks in Paris that had been traced back to the neighbourhood.

NAANU TRANSNATIONAL SOUNDSYSTEM

We asked all Naanu members, spread out over the globe, to send us songs that evoke a sense of resistance, be it universal and/or personal. The Naanu radio hosts physically present at De Bosbar will transmit these songs back to them through the (borderless) radio waves.
