'Een idee van de zee' (2016, 61’) - Nina de Vroome

'A propos de Nice' (1930, 23’) - Jean Vigo

"Een idee van de zee takes its audience to the IBIS maritime boarding school in Ostend. In the buildings that look out to the sea, boys from six to sixteen sleep, eat and play. They learn how to read the sea, sail with a fishing boat and help haul in the catch. In the classrooms, the impetuous sea is captured on maps. The sea might seem timeless, but much is changing. The coast is permeated with nostalgia, as if the sea had turned its face to the past. Sooner or later the fishing fleet will disappear, together with many endangered species of fish. The fish auction hall of Ostend is in decay, the harbour coated in rust. Nonetheless, a new colour is appearing from underneath the peeling paint."

Nina de Vroome on À propos de Nice (1930, 23’) by Jean Vigo:

"In this film, the sea washes over the shoreline of Nice. The water washes associations and thoughts ashore. Jean Vigo follows the rhythm of the returning waves and his swerving camera movements depict the city that is closely connected to the sea. Similar to Jean Vigo, I am a beachcomber searching for ideas of the sea."
