Tune In / Tune Out

With Tune In / Tune Out PiP aims to create a place for listening, using radio as a means to focus on sound. He invites Maika Garnica, Hannah Lyssens, Lou Wéry and Marie De Broeck for a little chat about how they approach listening, each from their own practice. PiP’s work revolves around a simple message: tune into your environment and use your ears. His use of field recordings sheds a light on the sonic world that surrounds us and he zooms in on the musical character they carry. It’s about harvesting a sound and harnessing its energy.

Hannah Lyssens werkt bij aifoon, een Gentse kunstenorganisatie die het luisteren op een artistieke en participatieve manier onderzoekt. Altijd en overal omringt geluid ons, maar vaak blijven onze oren gesloten, terwijl er zoveel moois schuilt in het luisteren. Central in Maika Garnica´s practice is the relationship between the environment, the spectator and the artist. She often applies prototypes to comprehend the complex relation between form and matter while instigating the position of the body as a vehicle for social connections. Through various contextual variations the nature of the work shifts spontaneously from sculptures, utilitarian objects to sound installations.

Maika Garnica neemt het sculpturaal medium als vertrekpunt om de relatie tussen kunstenaar, toeschouwer en ruimte te onderzoeken. Variaties in context en interactie doen de aard van haar werk voortdurend verschuiven, van sculptuur tot geluidsobject of gebruiksvoorwerp. Haar werken vormen prototypes die de complexe verhouding tussen vorm en materie articuleren en tegelijk tot nieuwe vormen van communicatie kunnen leiden.

Marie De Broeck studied radio at RITCS. Gratuated as an audiomaker evolved to become an audiopromoter and event organiser. She's one of the co-founders of Matinée, a community driven Brussels based concept gathered around slow music, on Sunday. She tries to create a sense of active and collective listening.
