After a magnificent performance at last year’s Summer Bummer Festival, drummer and composer Mike Reed returns for a club show with his all star ensemble Separatist Party, featuring poet/vocalist Marvin Tate, Ben LaMar Gay on cornet and the minimalist-psych trio of Bitchin Bajas (Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan and Rob Frye).
The Separatist Party’s music is often heavily rhythmic and synthesized, occasionally epic in scope, with Tate’s lyrics carving out images of fragmentation and isolation. The music is part of a larger catalog of Reed compositions that was inspired by the 2015 news essay, “The Lonely Death of George Bell” by N.R. Kleinfield. Starting with minimal loops, and adding concentric layers the band creates a collage inspired as much by Don Cherry and Pharoah Sanders as by the Krautrock of Can, keyboard explorations of Terry Riley, and street preacher monologues.
Their self-titled debut album was released in October on We Jazz Records and was quickly recognized as one of the jazz highlights of 2023, from The New York Times and the Chicago Reader to London Jazz News. The singles ‘Your Soul’ and ‘Floating With An Intimate Stranger’ were featured by Gilles Peterson’s on his Worldwide FM radio show.

Na een fantastisch optreden op het Summer Bummer Festival vorig jaar, keert drummer en componist Mike Reed terug voor een clubshow met zijn all star ensemble Separatist Party, met dichter/zanger Marvin Tate, cornettist Ben LaMar Gay en het minimalistisch-psych trio Bitchin Bajas (Cooper Crain, Dan Quinlivan en Rob Frye).
De muziek van de Separatist Party is vaak sterk ritmisch en gesynthetiseerd, soms episch van omvang, waarbij de teksten van Tate beelden oproepen van fragmentatie en isolatie. De muziek maakt deel uit van een grotere catalogus van Reed-composities die werd geïnspireerd door het nieuwsessay uit 2015 “The Lonely Death of George Bell” van N.R. Kleinfield. Beginnend met minimale loops en het toevoegen van concentrische lagen creëert de band een collage die zowel geïnspireerd is door Don Cherry en Pharoah Sanders als door de Krautrock van Can, keyboardverkenningen van Terry Riley en monologen van straatpredikanten
